On 19 March, our CEO Dr. Nam NGUYEN and Project Director Ms. Hue NGUYEN attended the technical workshop “Updating the citywide greenhouse gas emissions inventory 2020, 2021 and building in-house inventory capacity for Hanoi city” organized by Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DONRE). The workshop was held in a hybrid format with the participation of representatives of departments, localities, C40, consulting agencies including Ricardo (England) and KLINOVA.

The event is within the framework of the C40 Organization project with the purpose of cooperating with Hanoi City and Ho Chi Minh City to produce citywide greenhouse gas (GHG) emission Inventories for the two most recent successive data years, and to build the capacity of the city administration to carry out future inventories and ensure that the updates and capacity building efforts support the City’s climate change goals.

In the morning session, KLINOVA’s experts presented valuable information about data requirements for city-level GHG inventories and the roles of stakeholders as well as current status and difficulties in collecting data for greenhouse gas inventory.

In the afternoon session, KLINOVA introduced greenhouse gas inventory according to the Global Protocol on Community-scale GHG Inventory (GPC) and the results of greenhouse gas inventory for Hanoi City in 2020 and 2021. Ricardo Consulting’s representative shared about the importance of greenhouse gas inventory in building an action plan to respond to climate change in Hanoi.

Representatives of the Departments also discussed and suggested the next steps to obtain a more complete set of data for city-level greenhouse gas inventories. Representatives of the DONRE also look forward to continuing to receive support from C40 for the upcoming inventory periods, emphasizing the importance of knowledge sharing and technical assistance in their ongoing efforts to combat climate change.

Greenhouse gas inventories are the first step and an important foundation for climate action plans. As inventories are developed, they will be used to track emissions reduction targets and other monitoring activities. Other benefits include building the image of the city, communication and persuasion tools to attract the participation of many audiences (e.g. other city government agencies, investors, the public).

Overall, the results of the GHG inventory play a pivotal role in guiding Hanoi City towards a sustainable, low-carbon future while also fostering economic growth, environmental protection, and societal well-being.
