The Department of Climate Change (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) has issued Official Dispatch No. 1726/BĐKH-PTCBT to relevant agencies, organizations, and units involved in greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction programs in Vietnam, announcing the calculated emission coefficient for the national power grid in 2023.
The calculated emission coefficient for Vietnam's power grid in 2023 is 0.6592 tCO2/MWh, lower than the 0.6766 tCO2/MWh recorded in 2022.
Prior to 2014, Vietnam maintained a low greenhouse gas (GHG) emission coefficient for its power grid due to the large share of hydropower. However, the expansion of coal- and gas-fired power plants pushed the emission coefficient higher from 2015 to 2020. Since 2021, the rapid growth of renewable energy, including solar and wind power, has led to a reduction in the emission coefficient.
The emission coefficient of Vietnam’s power grid for 2023 was researched and developed by the Department of Climate Change in collaboration with relevant agencies, to fulfill Vietnam’s commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The results have been communicated to agencies, organizations, and units for reference; consistent application in programs and projects related to carbon credit mechanisms, GHG reduction activities; developing emission scenarios for updating the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and creating greenhouse gas reduction plans for relevant sectors.
