According to the Department of Climate Change, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the calculated emission coefficient for Vietnam’s power grid in 2022 is 0.6766 tCO2/MWh.

The above information was published in official dispatch No. 327/BĐKH-PTCBT of the Department of Climate Change sent to organizations and units participating in programs and projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Vietnam.

In 2023, the Department of Climate Change, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, collaborated with relevant organizations to study and establish the emission coefficient of Vietnam’s power grid in 2022. This information is intended for reference by agencies, organizations, and units to uniformly implement it in programs and projects related to carbon credit exchange and offset mechanisms, activities targeting greenhouse gas emission reduction, the formulation of baseline development scenarios for updating Nationally Determined Contributions, and the development of plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in relevant sectors.

According to data reported by the Department of Climate Change – Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, from 2014 onwards, the emission coefficient of Vietnam’s power grid was quite low (0.6612 tons/MWh). However, since 2015, Vietnam has built a series of large capacity thermal power plants such as: Dung Quat, Mong Duong, Phu My, Song Hau, Vinh Tan, Vung Ang 1, 2… Therefore, from 2015 to 2018 this coefficient increased extremely quickly, moving towards a concerning emissions scenario. From 2019 onwards, the emission factor of the power grid began to decrease significantly thanks to the development of solar power and wind power.

Reducing grid emissions is an important part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. Vietnam in particular and other countries need to keep upping their usage of renewable energy and improve energy efficiency to reduce grid emissions and transition towards a low-carbon future.
