On 22–23 October, KLINOVA was in Son La to deliver a training programme for businesses and farmers on “Practical Digital and Green Transformation in Northern Vietnam’s Tea and Coffee Value Chains,” focusing on ESG, low-emission practices, traceability, and sustainability standards.

KLINOVA Supports Businesses on Their Green Transformation Journey

The programme featured Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Hue, MSc – Project Director at KLINOVA Climate Innovation Consulting & Services and an international climate change reviewer for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Combining insights into international policy trends with practical business experience, the training explored the growing importance of sustainability requirements, emissions management, and information transparency across Northern Vietnam’s tea and coffee value chains.

Through two specialised sessions, participants gained practical knowledge and frameworks to identify risks, assess their current practices, and determine concrete steps towards green transformation.

At the training, businesses and local farmers in Son La also participated in other thematic sessions, including “EUDR and Transparent Traceability,” “Green Trademark Protection for Sustainable Agriculture,” and “Vietfarm Standards and the Application of Microorganisms in Low-Emission Farming.” Each session provided valuable practical insights to support the sustainable development of local businesses and farming communities in Son La.

Session 1: ESG and International Standards – Shaping Adaptation Pathways for Vietnamese Businesses

The first session introduced KLINOVA and explored the role of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) in corporate sustainability strategies. As international standards increasingly shape business operations, the speaker examined emerging regulations on ESG and carbon emissions, including the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The session also highlighted growing expectations around food traceability and supply chain transparency in export markets.

A key focus was the increasing pressure businesses face from export markets and the green finance sector. Beyond meeting international partners’ requirements, companies are increasingly expected to demonstrate robust ESG data management, transparent reporting, and effective risk governance. The session also addressed the current state of ESG awareness among Vietnamese businesses, highlighting the need to strengthen their capacity to adapt to evolving requirements and implement sustainable business practices.

Building on these insights, the speaker outlined five essential steps for businesses: understanding relevant regulations and assessing their impacts, measuring emissions and establishing a baseline, collecting ESG data, strengthening supply chain management, and developing a transformation roadmap aligned with Net Zero goals. These steps demonstrate that ESG is not merely a compliance requirement but also an integral part of long-term business strategy, risk management, and competitiveness.

Session 2: Corporate Greenhouse Gas Inventory

Building on the discussion of ESG and international standards, the second session focused on greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories at the corporate and facility levels. Key topics included an overview of GHG accounting, relevant legal and policy frameworks, inventory boundaries, calculation methodologies, and implementation principles. These foundational concepts help businesses understand how to identify, measure, and manage emissions generated by their production and business activities.

A key highlight was the introduction of essential technical terms, including Activity Data, Emission Factors, and Global Warming Potential (GWP). Participants explored the data and methodologies used to calculate greenhouse gas emissions. The session also emphasised the principles of relevance, completeness, consistency, transparency, and accuracy to ensure the reliability of inventory results.

In particular, the session introduced the nine-step process for conducting GHG inventories at the corporate and facility levels, complemented by practical exercises to help participants apply their knowledge. Understanding this process enables businesses to prepare more effectively for relevant reporting requirements while establishing a reliable data foundation to identify major emission sources, develop reduction measures, and progressively implement their green transformation roadmaps.
